- Benchmark traffic, rankings and conversions before you change anything.
- Map every old URL to a new one and set 301 redirects.
- Keep or improve content on pages that already rank.
- Monitor Search Console closely for at least 60 days after launch.
A redesign is a chance to modernise your brand, speed up your site and convert more visitors. It is also one of the most common causes of sudden traffic loss. Changed URLs, deleted content and forgotten redirects can wipe out years of SEO work overnight.
This website redesign checklist shows you how to relaunch with confidence.
Signs your website needs a redesign
- It looks dated compared to competitors
- It is slow, especially on mobile
- Bounce rates are high and conversion rates are low
- Updating content is difficult or requires a developer
- It is not secure or uses outdated technology
- Your business, services or brand have changed
Phase 1: Benchmark before you touch anything
Record your current performance
Export data for the last 12 months from GA4 and Google Search Console: organic sessions, top landing pages, top keywords, conversions and backlinks to each page.
Crawl the existing site
Use a crawler to capture every URL, title, meta description, H1, canonical and status code. This becomes your reference for the migration.
Identify your most valuable pages
Mark pages that drive traffic, rankings, links or conversions. These pages must be preserved or improved, never casually removed.
Phase 2: Plan the new structure
Build a content inventory
For every existing page decide: keep, improve, merge or remove. Merging thin pages into stronger ones often improves SEO.
Create a URL map
List each old URL and its new destination. Keep URLs the same wherever possible. Where they must change, plan a 301 redirect.
Plan the new navigation
Group services logically, keep important pages within a few clicks of the homepage and design clear paths to contact or purchase.
Phase 3: Design and build
Design for conversions
Use what you learned from analytics and heatmaps. Put the most important message and call to action above the fold, add trust signals near decision points and simplify forms.
Build on a staging site
Develop on a password-protected staging environment that is blocked from search engines, so Google does not index unfinished pages.
Carry over on-page SEO
Transfer optimised titles, meta descriptions, headings, alt text and schema. Do not let a new template silently strip them out. Our on-page SEO guide explains what to check.
Build for speed
A redesign is the perfect time to fix Core Web Vitals: lightweight themes, optimised images, fewer plugins and good caching.
Phase 4: Pre-launch checks
- Every old URL redirects to the correct new URL with a single 301
- No redirect chains or loops
- Internal links point directly to new URLs, not through redirects
- XML sitemap contains only new, indexable URLs
- Robots.txt allows crawling and the staging noindex has been removed
- Canonical tags point to the correct live URLs
- Analytics, tag manager and conversion tracking work
- Forms send correctly and confirmation pages track
- Mobile layouts, speed and accessibility tested
Phase 5: Launch day
- Put the new site live during a low-traffic period.
- Crawl the live site to confirm redirects and status codes.
- Submit the new sitemap in Search Console.
- Use URL Inspection to request indexing for key pages.
- Test forms, checkout and tracking again on production.
Phase 6: Post-launch monitoring
Watch these daily for the first two weeks, then weekly for at least two months:
| Metric | Where to check | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Crawl errors and 404s | Search Console | Sudden increase in not-found pages |
| Indexed pages | Search Console Pages report | Large drop in indexed URLs |
| Organic traffic | GA4 | Sustained drop over 20 percent |
| Rankings | Rank tracker | Key pages falling off page one |
| Conversions | GA4 | Lower conversion rate than before |
Small fluctuations are normal for a few weeks. Sustained drops usually point to missing redirects, removed content or technical errors that can be fixed quickly if caught early.
Common redesign mistakes
- Deleting pages that rank because they “look old”
- Changing every URL without redirects
- Launching with the staging noindex still active
- Replacing text content with images or sliders
- Forgetting to move tracking codes

Will changing my theme affect SEO?
It can if headings, content, schema or speed change. Test the new theme on staging and compare key pages before switching.
